The need for service dogs is at an all time high. No one should have to wait two years for a service dog. Training and preparing a dog for service work is a long and expensive endeavor. In fact, it can cost $12,000 - $15,000 or more to train one service dog. There are costly vet bills and hip x-rays for our puppies and dogs in training, training aids and supplies, equipment, harnesses, leashes, crates and the list goes on and on. The Gift of Sunshine requests only a fraction of that cost from each recipient. No applicant is ever refused because of their inability to pay. And, our list of applicants waiting for a dog continues to grow.

Pennies 4 Paws Program

The Pennies 4 Paws Program is a fundraising activity that directly supports The Gift of Sunshine. Participating schools, groups and organizations bring in their spare change during an established campaign time (usually one to several months). At the end of the campaign, the change is converted and a check is given to TGOS. We award the participating group or organization with a framed Certificate of Participation. In some cases, a representative from our organization can visit the group with a puppy in training to provide information and answer questions about service dogs. Groups and organizations can participate in a myriad of ways. They can have fun in the traditional way by bringing in and collecting spare change or they can come up with other creative ideas on raising money. Schools can organize "thons" with sponsorships to raise money. The possibilities are almost endless! The Pennies 4 Paws program is a wonderful way to support The Gift of Sunshine. It can help foster altruism and social responsibility among those schools, groups or organizations interested in providing community service support. It's a great way for kids to learn about disabilities and how our recipients can remain independent with the help of a dog. There is no minimum amount of money required to participate in the program-The Gift of Sunshine appreciates all our Pennies 4 Paws groups. This program is open to any group, school or organization. The money raised from the Pennies 4 Paws program will go directly toward the costs associated with raising and training service dogs.
