Welcome To The Gift of Sunshine, Inc.

The Gift of Sunshine firmly believes the goal of working with a service dog is to enable its recipient to stay as active as possible. Some of our recipients were born with a disease, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or spina bifida. Others were diagnosed later in life with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or spinal cord injuries. All of the people that choose to share their lives with a service dog have one thing in common, despite their very different backgrounds. They have all made the decision to be independent and to remain an active member of society.

It is important that the use of a dog complements the strengths and abilities of the mobility-impaired person. The Gift of Sunshine trains different types of service dogs: Walker dogs assist people who are still ambulatory, but may have balance problems or walk with the assistance of a cane or walker. Wheelchair dogs are matched to individuals who use a manual wheelchair. Electric wheelchair dogs work with individuals who use scooters. The dogs are trained to provide balance and support, help someone up from a fall, retrieve dropped objects, assist with wheelchair pulling, open doors, turn off lights and other tasks specifically needed by their partners.

Mugsy holds a heavy door open, enabling Amie to exit the library.

Puppies in The Gift of Sunshine training program are donated by breeders, private homes or shelters. The dogs are raised by volunteers in their homes. Volunteer puppy raisers are responsible for basic obedience and socialization. All of the advanced training is done by experienced trainers. All dogs are trained specifically for a particular individual, carefully matching temperament and lifestyle.
